The steady rhythm of rain drummed on the city’s rooftops as Phoenix walked briskly through the French Quarter, the neon signs casting their vivid glow across wet cobblestones. She pulled her coat tighter, feeling a familiar unease curling in her chest. Sam Riaz had called her, urgency threaded through his voice. A young woman named Serena Li had arrived at the precinct in tears, claiming her sister, Elena, had been kidnapped.
Phoenix pushed open the door to the station, the warmth and chaos inside a stark contrast to the chill outside. Sam spotted her immediately, his eyes tired but focused. “Glad you made it,” he said, ushering her into the interrogation room where Serena sat, hands trembling as she gripped a cup of coffee.
Serena’s eyes widened as she saw Phoenix. “You’re her, aren’t you? The one they talk about?” There was hope in her voice, thin and desperate.
Phoenix nodded, sliding into the seat across from her. “Tell me what happened.”
Elena had been attending exclusive gatherings, Serena explained—places where magic and technology mingled in ways most people couldn’t imagine. She’d become entranced by a man named Levi Roth, known for hosting these secretive events. Serena’s voice wavered as she spoke. “She told me he was different, that he understood her... but then she started coming back changed.”
Phoenix felt an odd pressure behind her eyes as Serena talked, a sensation that told her there was more at play than infatuation. Sam, leaning against the wall, exchanged a glance with Phoenix. “Levi Roth,” he muttered. “A name I haven’t heard in a while.”
Maya Torres, who had been quietly observing from the doorway, stepped forward. “Levi’s notorious in the VR and arcano-tech world. I’ve dug into his code before. It’s... unsettling. He has ways of weaving enchantments into his tech.”
They tracked Levi to an arcano-club hidden behind a façade of abandoned storefronts, a place where the walls pulsed with enchanted lights and holograms shifted like living murals. The air buzzed with excitement and tension, making Phoenix’s senses prickle.
As they stepped inside, a subtle trail of arcane energy caught Phoenix’s attention. It was a faint line, almost invisible, but she knew it was Elena’s signature. She followed it deeper into the club, Sam shadowing her with a hand near his weapon.
At the center of the dance floor, Levi stood with a practiced smile, surrounded by admirers. His gaze flicked toward Phoenix, recognition sparking in his eyes. “Well, well. The infamous Phoenix,” he drawled, the smile turning sharper. “Didn’t think you’d show.”
Phoenix felt the air grow heavy as his words resonated with an unnatural timbre. Her fingers curled into fists. “Where’s Elena?”
Levi chuckled, taking a step closer. “What’s she to you? Just another soul caught between the real and the unreal?” His eyes narrowed. “Or are you here because you’re starting to understand what you are?”
Phoenix’s breath caught, but she didn’t let it show. “You’re going to tell me what you did,” she said, her voice colder than the rain outside.
Before Levi could answer, the lights shifted and pulsed. The crowd, sensing the change, backed away as a murmur rippled through them. Phoenix felt the pressure in her chest surge as Levi whispered, “You’re a Lost Echo, aren’t you?”
The air around them crackled as Phoenix focused, following the thread of Elena’s signature to a hidden room at the back of the club. There, they found Elena, disheveled but alive, surrounded by equipment humming with forbidden magic.
Elena’s eyes welled with tears as she saw Serena rush to her side. “I couldn’t let him do it to someone else,” she whispered, voice breaking. “I needed proof.”
Phoenix’s gaze hardened as she turned back to Levi, who was now flanked by two enforcers. Sam’s hand moved to his gun, but Levi raised a hand, eyes locked on Phoenix. “You don’t even know what you’re capable of,” he said. “But I do.”
The enforcers charged, and chaos erupted. Sam tackled one to the ground as Phoenix found herself facing the other. The energy inside her stirred, a pulse of heat that radiated through her body. She reached out, and a shockwave of power sent the enforcer sprawling, eyes wide with fear as he scrambled away.
Levi grinned, though it was strained. “There it is,” he whispered. “The flame of a Lost Echo.” Before he could move, Sam lunged, catching Levi with a swift punch that dropped him to the floor.
With Levi in custody, the truth unraveled. Elena’s staged disappearance was her way of baiting Levi into revealing his manipulation, which had scarred more than just her. The illegal enchantments were confiscated, and Levi’s network of arcano-tech dealings began to surface.
Serena hugged Elena tightly as they thanked Sam and Phoenix, eyes glistening with gratitude. Maya stood nearby, looking at Phoenix with newfound wonder. “You know, whatever you did back there... that wasn’t just luck.”
Phoenix nodded slowly, eyes distant. “I’m starting to think I’m more than I know.”
As they left the station, Sam walked alongside Phoenix, the rain pattering softly on their coats. “What did he mean? ‘Lost Echo’?” he asked.
Phoenix shook her head, a whisper of fear and hope curling in her chest. “I wish I knew, Sam.”
Alone in her small apartment, Phoenix stared into the mirror. The whisper echoed in her ears, clearer than it had ever been. “Find me.” This time, a faint, shimmering sigil appeared on her forehead, flickering like a flame. Her fingers reached for it, and the reflection blinked out.
Somewhere in the depths of New Orleans, hidden from prying eyes, a shadowed figure watched through a screen, a satisfied smile curving their lips.
